ROMANIAN WRITERS ON WRITING
A Celebration with writers Nina Cassian, Carmen Firan, Dan Lungu, Simona Popescu, Bogdan Suceava, Lucian Dan Teodorovici, joined by Norman Manea and Edward Hirsch
The Romanian Cultural Institute in New York salutes the publication of "Romanian Writers on Writing," a new anthology offering a panoramic and unique glimpse into Romanian literature for English language readers. Including eighty writers from 19th century to the present, this anthology is edited by acclaimed author Norman Manea, and co-edited by Sanda Cordos, with translations from the Romanian by Raluca Manea and Carla Baricz. Published by Trinity University Press, "Romanian Writers on Writing" is part of the highly celebrated series "The Writer’s World," edited by Edward Hirsch, poet and J.S.Guggenheim Memorial Foundation president. Join us on March 22 and 23 for a series of events celebrating this new publication:

THU March 22, 6:30 pm at RCINY: ROMANIAN WRITERS ON WRITING
Join us on March 22 at RCINY for an evening hosted by Norman Manea and RCINY Director Corina Suteu, and introduced by Edward Hirsch, featuring readings and informal conversations with guest Romanian authors featured in the book. Nina Cassian, Dan Lungu, Simona Popescu, Lucian Dan Teodorovici, Carmen Firan and Bogdan Suceava will read from the book and discuss about their process, the joys and challenges of writing. The authors will be joined by translators Raluca Manea and Carla Baricz, and publisher Barbara Ras. FREE ADMISSION

On Friday, March 23, the celebration continues at the Bard College with "The Writer The Censor The Market." Norman Manea will moderate a conversation with writers Carmen Firan, Dan Lungu, Simona Popescu, Bogdan Suceava, and Lucian Dan Teodorovici, joined by Edward Hirsch and translator Carla Baricz, about writing under the ideological censorship prevailing during the communist regime and the economic pressure that replaced it, and the shifting place and role of the writer. CRULIC: THE PATH TO BEYOND, directed by Anca Damian at New Directors/New Films

RCINY is happy to announce that Anca Damian’s film "Crulic: The Path To Beyond" will be presented in the official selection of the New Directors/New Films festival, taking place between March 21 – April 1 at the Film Society of Lincoln Center and MoMA. The first animated Romanian feature of the past 20 years will have two screenings on Friday, March 23, at 6.30 pm, at MoMA, and on Saturday, March 24, at 2 pm at FLSC, both followed by Q&As with the Romanian director, attending with the support of RCINY. The innovative documentary utilizes hand drawn, cutout and collage animation techniques, combined with some very dark humor to create a striking documentary about a young Romanian’s hunger strike in a Polish jail. New Directors/New Films has been promoting, for more than 40 years now, works by emerging filmmakers, celebrating some of the most innovative new voices in cinema. READ MORE
