The event is organized by the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York in collaboration with the East Central European Center, The Harriman Institute, and the Nicolae Iorga Chair of Romanian Language and Culture.

Please, join us, on April 21, 6.30 pm, International Affairs Building, Room 1219 (12th floor) for a talk on the most intriguing Romanian (and European surrealists), Gellu Naum, as well as on Romanian and European surrealism.
 
The talk if offered by Professor Ion Pop, from the Babes-Bolyai University of Cluj, Romania.
 
Professor Ion Pop, who collaborated with the French Department at Columbia University in the mid-nineties will offer his conference in Romanian, with a complete English version.
 
A PPT presentation on Romanian surrealism will accompany the talk.


Professor Ion Pop is the most authoritative voice in the Romanian avant-garde and its connection with the French/European avant-garde. He taught at the Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, where he also held a number of administrative positions, such as Dean of the Faculty of Letters. Between 1990-1993 he was the director of the Romanian Cultural Center in Paris. His academic career is represented mostly by studies on the avant-garde, out of which we select: Romanian Literary Avant-Garde, The Romanian Avant-Garde in Poetry,  The Poetic Game, French Hours. He also published poetry and an impressive number of academic articles and studies in Romanian and international academic publications.

Professor Pop is the translator (into Romanian) and commentator of Georges Poulet – La conscience critique, and Jean Starobinski- 1789- Les emblèmes de la raison.

The event will be followed by a reception.

Miscarea romaneasca de avangarda a dovedit receptivitatea literaturii si culturii romane la procesul european/mondial de modernizare radicala, pe care l-a si influentat in anumite privinte, prin intermediul unor artisti de origine romana care au contribuit la constituirea unor atitudini, ideologii sau estetici avangardiste.
 
Seria de evenimente a ICRNY, dedicate avangardelor, deschide un proiect mai amplu ce urmeaza sa fie continuat in 2016-2017. Acum un secol, literatura, artele vizuale, fotografia, muzica, cinematografia, au lansat primele manifeste si creatii, deschizand prima pagina a istoriei avangardei in lume.
 
Profesorul universitar dr. Ion Pop va sustine la New York doua conferinte dedicate avangardei: Gellu Naum si suprarealismul romanesc pe data de 21 aprilie 2015, la 6.30 PM, la Columbia University si Manifestele avangardei romanesti in context European pe 22 aprilie 2015, la 7 PM, in sala Auditorium a Institutului Cultural Roman din New York.
 

Aceste conferinte vor fi insotite de un amplu material ilustrativ, organizat de marele specialist al avangardei romanesti, prof. dr. Ion Pop, constand in pagini ale revistelor unde s-au publicat manifestele avangardei, portrete si documente referitoare la creatorii avangardei romanesti si universale, agenda avangardelor, pe anii 2014, 2015, 2016, lecturi din poemele si proza lui Gellu Naum, fragmente din spectacole de teatru si monologuri dintr-o antologie a literaturii de avangarda.

 
Continutul celor doua conferinte este diferit. Daca evenimentul de la ICR New York este o prezentare sintetica a avangardei romanesti si a manifestelor ei, conferinta de la Columbia University este dedicata prezentarii creatiei marelui scriitor avangardist Gellu Naum si aniversarii unui secol de la nasterea sa. Pornind de la Gellu Naum, in cadrul conferintei vor fi prezentati alti scriitori romani avangardisti (Gherasim Luca, Benjamin Fondane, Isidore Isou si lettrismul, teatrul absurdului creat de Eugen Ionescu).

 Prof. dr. Ion Pop este profesor la Facultatea de Litere a Universitatii “Babes-Bolyai”, Cluj-Napoca. A condus, ca redactor-sef, apoi ca director, revista “Echinox”, intre anii 1969 si 1983. A fost director al Centrului Cultural Roman din Paris (1990-1993) si decan al Facultatii de Litere a Universitatii “Babes-Bolyai” din Cluj (1996-2000).

A publicat volumele de poezie: Propuneri pentru o fantana (1966), Biata mea cumintenie (1969), Gramatica tarzie (1977), Soarele si uitarea (1985), Amanarea generala (1990), Descoperirea ochiului (2002), Elegii in ofensiva(2003), Litere si albine (2010), In fata marii (2011). Este autorul unor studii de critica si istorie literara: Avangardismul poetic romanesc (1969), Poezia unei generatii (1973), Nichita Stanescu – spatiul si mastile poeziei (1980), Lucian Blaga. Universul liric (1981), Lecturi fragmentare (1983), Jocul poeziei (1985), Avangarda in literatura romana (1990), A scrie si a fi. Ilarie Voronca si metamorfozele poeziei (1993), Gellu Naum. Poezia contra literaturii (2001), Viata si texte (2001), Lucian Blaga in 10 poeme (2004), Introducere in avangarda literara romaneasca (2007), «Echinox». Vocile poeziei (2008), Din avangarda spre ariergarda (2010), Scara din biblioteca (2013).
 

Prof. dr. Ion Pop a realizat doua serii de interviuri, publicate in volumele: Ore franceze, I-II (1979, 2002). A fost distins cu premii ale Uniunii Scriitorilor din Romania pe anii 1973, 1979, 1985, 2001, 2008. Premiul Academiei Romane (1985). A coordonat Dictionarul analitic de opere literare romanesti (4 vol. 1998-2003, reeditat in doua volume in 2007). A realizat o antologie a avangardei literare romanesti, La réhabilitation du rêve, Paris-Bucuresti, 2006. Traduceri din: Georges Poulet, Jean Starobinski, Gérard Genette, Tzvetan Todorov, Eugène Ionesco, Ilarie Voronca, Tristan Tzara, Paul Ricoeur, Benjamin Fondane, Paul Morand.
 
Gellu Naum (1915 - 2001) a fost un eseist, poet, prozator si dramaturg roman, de origine aromana, considerat cel mai important reprezentant roman al curentului suprarealist si unul dintre ultimii mari reprezentanti ai acestuia pe plan european.
